It’s a wrap! UQSM Show Review Part 1

The first UQSM (formerly the HQMS Show) Show has come and gone and after 8 days spent in Salt Lake City, Utah, I’m back home once again. It was a wonderful week but of course I’m always happy when I return home to family and our furry menagerie. I thought it might be fun to do a wrap up of the excitement of the quilt show itself in this post and follow up with a blog post of some highlights of my time spent sightseeing in the area next time.

I was very honored to have an exhibit of 10 of my favorite quilts and to be the Featured Artist at the UQSM Show.

It was great to see so many people looking at my quilts and I had the chance to chat with some folks and answer questions.

The Lion King Challenge was on display. It is always impressive to see all the quilts displayed.

Seeing my “Challenge within a challenge” quilt with Susan Stewart is like visiting an old friend.

I felt privileged to be one of the two judges for the contest portion of the show. The quilts were amazing. Rather than show the big winners here, I want to share my Judge’s Choice Award plus a few others that were favorites of mine.

It was fun to present my Judge’s Choice Ribbon to the maker of this amazing quilt in person!

This Harry Potter Quilt was amazing — so many details from the books!

I was tickled to see a quilt made from one of my original patterns! The maker did a splendid job…..

This quilt won a first place ribbon in its category. I was very impressed because it was quilted entirely with a Sashiko machine.

My classes were incredibly creative and fun because the students were talented and wonderful! It was such a blessing for me to get to know the students. These are some of the gals from the Chain Saw class. Considering it was held on Friday evening, we were all a little punchy by the end of the night. Not that that’s a bad thing!

Not all the students were present for the Modern T’s class photo, but those who were here when we took the picture certainly did a great job on their blocks. I loved their creative color and fabric choices.

Natalie did a GREAT job making ALL of her half-square triangles in one long chain!

And of course the ladies in the Lone Starburst class ROCKED their blocks!

As for the show and vendor mall, I ran into some awesome industry friends! Here, I caught up with Jerry Granata and Paula Reid.

It was great seeing these familiar faces! These gals came to my classes. I had met them previously on a quilter’s cruise to Hawaii!

Kim came to three of my classes and I had such fun getting to know her.

I would have been lost without Roxie; she was the classroom educator who handled all the machines and keep me laughing throughout the week!

One of the true highlights of the week was seeing my friend, Cindy Fox, who came to my class on Saturday morning. Cindy and I met at Wright Pat Air Force base in Dayton, Ohio, many years ago when our husband’s were still in the military. It was as if no time had passed since I saw her last. Isn’t it great to catch up with friends and pick up where you left off?

The new show owners, Moana (l) and Jina (r) are simply the most gracious, caring, wonderful ladies I’ve ever met. They truly care about making this new show a success by providing great education and opportunities for quilters everywhere. I simply cannot say enough about them! I love these gals……

Jina and Moana’s husbands are also very involved in the running of the show! These guys are just terrific.

Next time, I’ll share some beautiful photos I took when I had time to do a little sightseeing. Plus, I was able to check an item off my bucket list! Stay tuned…..

  4. Kimberly, it was fun to see that you are still teaching the Lone Starburst block. I was in your class in Prague April 2010, one of the three North Americans who were in your class. I also made another Lone Staburst for a challenge from Susan Briscoe to incorporate the 4 workshops I attended there into one wallhanging…using one of the colourful plush “paper” napkins used in the dining room of the hotel… I did… lovely to read your blog from time to time… and I have made items from several of your books which are now in my library…
