Welcome home

We did it. We signed the papers and closed on the sale of our new home yesterday!

The first thing I did was put a new mat at the front door.

This morning, the real work began in earnest. We’re making some minor (and some not-so-minor) changes to make the house truly our own. The painter arrived, followed by the floor men, the contractor, the handy man and the yard man. Despite all the organized chaos, I was having a ball. I was in my element. It felt like HGTV central!

Since I’m pretty exhausted after the past few days, I’ll simply post a few before, work in progress, and after shots. If you’d rather skip the remodeling bits, that’s okay by me. But be sure to scroll down to the bottom for a quick quilt top update.

Quilt Top Update

Remember the quilt I was making from my special Danish fabrics? Believe it or not, I got the top put together last week even amidst all the packing and preparation for moving! I’m so pleased with the way it turned out, and so happy I got it put together before I had to box up my sewing machines!

I had 9 pretty little pink blocks leftover after the top was completed. Rather than let them languish forgotten in some cupboard or drawer as another UFO, I put them together and made a fun little quilt! This sweet thing will be winding its way through the US snail mail system to cheer up a dear friend going through a rough patch right now. Hope it brings a smile to her face!

Stop back by soon for more updates and before/after photos. I’ll have lots to share with you!

  1. We just made a similar move last summer. It sounds a lot like what we did. Some minor changes like painting, replacing carpet etc. I’d love to see the progress.

    • Dear Sandy and Jocelyn –

Thank you both so much for taking time to write a comment! I hesitated last night about posting personal (boring?) stuff like our local move and small renovations because I don’t want people to think “oh, ho hum….” So it really tickles me that you both are interested in the progress on the house. As for the floor, I must confess it is really laminate flooring (sorry I said wood in the blog post. Just a habit I got into saying whenever we spoke about replacing the carpet.) The fact that we live in a hot, humid climate PLUS the cost factor played heavily into our decision to go with laminate. At first I really wanted hard wood because I thought all laminate flooring looked “fake.” But after doing a lot of research and shopping around, I found there are brands and styles of laminate floors that look so real (and are so durable, handle humidity and high traffic areas well) that I just couldn’t find reasons not to love it. Even as they began installing it yesterday, I worried about how it might look. But honestly, it is GORGEOUS! It has a look and sheen of real wood (and won’t scratch.) Plus, they tell me it is also very easy to care for! I honestly couldn’t be happier, so it was ultimately a good choice for us.

Sandy, for the particulars (in case you want to check it out) it is Kronotex laminate flooring, in the Wilmington finish.
Thanks, ladies for asking! I will continue to post “progress” photos! 🙂

  2. Oh how pretty. What kind/color of hardwood did you have installed? I’m thinking about hardwood for my house.

  3. You have a red front door!!!! I love red front doors! The remodeling looks as though it’s coming along well, and that house will have your stamp all over it in a few weeks. I am so happy for you. Can’t wait to see the sewing room.

Very cool quilt! The pink/lime green should put a smile on your friend’s face.

    • Hi Pat!
Yep, I admit….the red door sort of lured me in from the get-go. Things are progressing nicely and I’ll have some lovely update photos to share soon!

  4. Congrats on your new home! It is exciting. And lucky you getting to do some renovations too.

You are super woman. I’m amazed that you were able to quilt while packing. 🙂

    • Thank you so much, Amy! Honestly, I don’t feel much like Super Woman, but you sure encouraged me by your comment. Thanks for making my day!

  5. You’ll have to send me your new address!!!! Congrats!!!

  6. Kimberly,
Love you new house. Can’t wait to see photos of your studio when it is ready! Finished my mystery quilt from the cruise (fixed the block that was turned the wrong way too). I’m going to quilt it on a long arm for my first project. Will send you a photo.

  7. Are you a quilt show judge? Our quilt guild is having a quilt show Oct 12-13 in the Tampa area.
Please let me know, thanks so much, Claudia

    • Hi Claudia –
