A new ruler and a give-away!

The brand new, Simpli-EZ Jelly Roll Ruler is here!

The Fed-Ex man was a welcome sight at my door this morning, because he delivered the first box of Simpli-EZ Jelly Roll Rulers to me!

Introducing a new ruler I designed exclusively to cut jelly roll and honey bun strips, and all those fabulous precut fabric bundles!

When I began working on the quilts for Book #2, I realized that with a few exceptions, I was cutting the same basic sizes and shapes over and over. Tons of 2½” squares. Hundreds of 2½” x 4½” rectangles. Countless 5” squares and 5” x 10” rectangles. Half-square triangles from charm packs. With my rotary cutter in one hand, I kept reaching with my other hand for two or three different standard size rulers to cut these units, depending on the type and size of units I needed to cut.

Of course you can use any good ruler to cut these simple shapes. But I began to think it might be nice to use a ruler designed specifically to make it easy to see and cut the most basic of shapes from precut strips and squares quickly and accurately. I quickly realized I rarely cut any units with measurements other than whole, half, and quarter sizes to make these quilts. Eighth inch measurements were scarcely needed!

As with the other rulers I have invented, I designed this new ruler with two colors of ink to “highlight” the fabric, which makes it easier to see and more accurate to cut. I eliminated all the eighth inch markings, which makes the ruler clean and uncluttered so it is faster to see at a glance the lines to measure and cut your units. After extensive testing and several prototypes, I unveiled the brand new, one-of-a-kind, Simply EZ Jelly Roll Ruler to go hand-in-hand with my next book. It is designed it to work perfectly with all precut fabric bundles and it makes cutting fast and fun. It even works for left-handed quilters, too!

In a nutshell, here’s why I know you’ll love this ruler:

·      It works perfectly with Jelly Rolls, Honey Buns, Charm Squares, Layer Cakes and Turnovers.

·      It allows you to make cuts fast and accurately. I designed it so you can cut basic units such as squares, rectangles and triangles from 1½” and 2½” strips, and 5” and 10” squares!

·      The ruler has two-colors which makes the markings easy-to-see and easy-to-use. The mint green “highlight” lines denote the most commonly used sizes from precut fabric strips and squares.

·      There are no 1/8” lines on the ruler; only ¼”, ½” and whole inch markings make viewing clear and uncluttered.

·      It’s just plain fun to use!

A give-away!

So to celebrate the arrival of my newest ruler, I’ll send one to the person who leaves me a comment telling me why they really want a Simpli-EZ Jelly Roll Ruler and how they plan to use it.

I’ll choose the winner on Sunday evening, June 7th. Extra points and consideration for a mention on your blog – let me know how you heard about the giveaway. Good luck!

  1. This was invented for me! Since my stroke I have problems with cutting my fabrics so I have been using more and more of the precut fabrics. This ruler will be such a help and your new book will be used often at my house. I don’t blog but will mention you on my quilt forums.

  2. Hi
I would like to win one of your Jelly Roll Rulers. I have a lot of fabric that I would like to cut into jelly rolls, so I can make a new jelly roll quilt. I have every color of fabric in one design and I think it would make a fantastic quilt.
Again I would love to be a winner.
Thanks again for teaching the mystery quilt. I finished it and it came out great.
Are you going to teach the jelly roll next year at the Lancaster Show, as I would love to take more of your classes.

  3. Ohh.. you are a genious!!!! :o)
I hate having all those rulers on my table.. and never find the one I need… so this sounds very good….
And why do I want to have a ruler like this… maybe to finally get my first cut into some of the beauties I have bought-…yepp you heard me… they are still on display on a shelf… jelly´s, charmpacks and layer cakes…lol…
    Hmm..thats why!!! :o)

  4. I would love to have your rulers! Main reason is I precut all the fabric that comes into my sewing room into strips
when I am ready to make one of my scrappy quilts I pull out the strip draw of the size I need and start cutting away what I need
having smaller rulers to make my little blocks would make it so much easier
    Thanks
btw think those blue lines are awesome!

  5. Your sure must have done the Happy Dance when the package arrived! Congratulations on seeing another one of your great ideas come to fruition!

This ruler is such a cool idea!!!! When I’m cutting a lot of the same size pieces, I painstakingly put that colored tape on the underside of my ruler because it keeps me from making dumb cutting mistakes — well, lets just say it cuts down on the number of dumb cutting mistakes. Now I can use that tape for something else (like keeping the cat occupied)!

This would be wonderful for someone just learning to quilt. It can be very daunting task to cut those precise pieces for the very first time. Your ruler looks like it would be perfect to take some of the stress out of that beginning task.

  6. Hmm, I’m trying to figure out how left-handed friendly it is. I think I would have to use it upside down. 🙂

  7. I have been cutting scraps into strips for years and have way to many. I really need to use some up (and make room for more!). I think your ruler would be a fantastic tool to help speed up the process of cutting up those strips into usable pieces.
I would sure love to give it a try.

  8. The blue lines are pretty neat. I think that I would have to get your new book and make something out of it using the very cool rulers.

  9. Hi Kimberley I recently visited the USA (during your Fall) and bought a jelly roll of beautiful Autumn tones. Here is Australia we have virtually all evergreen trees and I wanted something to remind me of the beautiful colours I had seen. I have been wanting to start a quilt using the jelly roll and know that your new ruler will make it much easier. Thanks for this great opportunity. Kind regards Sam

  10. Hi Kimberly,
wow, you’re so clever!!! What an ingenious idea!! Congrats!
I just started (finally) cutting my precious collection of precuts (gasp!) a little while ago and while cutting along I had to use actually 3 rulers. Which I didn’t like at all…because at least one of them kept falling from my table, I couldn’t find it, grabbed the wrong one…too much thinking involved for late night cutting ;o).
I think with this ruler in hand I could design my own JR/CP/LK quilts which I haven’t done yet because I was a bit afraid of the math…
Leah S had a good point, I’m left handed….would it work for me, too?
    Greetings from Germany,
Julia…who reads your blog regularly but remains quiet most of the time ;o)

  11. I’m getting ready to use some charm squares, a jelly roll and cake squares to make a queen size quilt this looks like a great ruler and I would love to try it!

  18. I would love to have this ruler to make a Lonestar quilt which I have been wanting to do for so long but I have RA (arthritis) and so many times my hands and wrists bother me and it is so hard to keep cutting and cutting so this would probably work out great for me. Where can this also be purchased I think I want to get one for a friend also.
thanks for thinking about all of us cutters.

  19. I just saw where Bolts to Bindings in Bakersfield is having a workshop on our quilt block in “Jelly Roll quilt Magic”. I have the book but not the ruler. It seems that the ruler will save a lot of planning. I do not live in Bakersfield so am not planning to take the class. I have made several lone star quilts and wondering how this will work to cut down on the ripping and resewing to make it fit. I am 85 years young, and planning to make many more quilts. I think this tool is worth having………………..
